Description

The purpose of the Black Male Symposium at Shippensburg University is to examine, explore, dissect, articulate, and most importantly develop strategies to ensure that black males graduate from high school and are both academically and socially integrated into college to increase and improve retention rates of black men in higher education. The symposium serves as a space to exchange ideas and perspectives concerning the dynamics of Black males in the educational pipeline. The symposium will offer a diverse array of content that will elicit intellectual thought, discussion, and ideas that can be implemented to serve and improve the experiences of Black males in a variety of educational contexts.

Goals for Symposium

  • Goal 1. Inform stakeholders on best practices for educating Black Males.
  • Goal 2. Identify Obstacles / barriers that prohibit success of members of this population.
  • Goal 3. Bring state stakeholders together to begin to outline a plan for success and create a pipeline from high school to college.
  • Goal 4. Promote teaching pedagogies that work for this population.

The inaugural symposium will be hosted by Shippensburg University Division of Enrollment Management & Student Success on April 11-12, 2019, in collaboration with the Division of Student Affairs, the Office of Retention, and the Office of Social Equity, the College of Education and Human Services.
