Description

A Special Mindfulness Retreat with Shinzen Young - November Neuro-Mindfulness

Join the Monastic Academy this November for a very special retreat with Shinzen Young at our beautiful location in Lowell, VT.

This retreat will be perhaps the first ever public retreat offering Neuromodulation with tDCS devices. Neuromodulation is an emerging brain technology to directly impact the mind by targeting specific areas of the brain with various low energy technologies such as transcranial ultrasound, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and photobiomodulation (near-infrared light).

Usage of the Brain Technology offered in this retreat is completely optional.

Along with Shinzen, Dr. Baron E. Short will be at the retreat with several Zendo tDCS devices to train those wishing to use the devices. Dr. Short is a trained medical doctor and neuropsychiatrist. Dr. Bashar Badran and Dr. Baron E. Short are co-founders in this form of tDCS-enchanced meditation called "e-meditation".

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), is a non-invasive brain stimulation in which two electrodes are placed on the head and deliver a weak electrical current to the underlying brain areas. The electricity is delivered to specific brain areas that are associated with a meditative state. Stimulating these areas can accelerate and enhance meditation for both novice and expert meditators. In Dr. Short's and Dr. Badran's two initial trials, e-meditation makes individuals more calm, less restless and stressed, and reduces mind wandering.

Shinzen and neuroscientists such as Dr. Jay Sanguinetti, Dr. Short, and Dr. Badran have been colloborating on how to use neuromodulation to enhance mindfulness. Shinzen has written previously about this technology & meditation: Meet My New Girlfriend: tDCS. Below is an excerpt:

The effects of tDCS seem to map directly to the core themes in mindfulness.

  • Enhanced ability to focus (this seems to relate to the concentration piece in my definition of mindfulness)
  • Enhanced ability to detect signals against a noisy background (this seems to relate to the sensory clarity piece)
  • Enhanced ability to deal with pain (this may be related to equanimity)
  • The turning off of mental talk (i.e., a samatha effect)

Participants will have the option to choose to participate with the tDCS devices or opt to do a silent retreat without the brain technology. Either option is great.

The retreat will feature:

  • Option to use Neuromodulation tDCS devices
  • Daily group process (guided meditation, plus discussion)
  • One-on-one meditation guidance from Shinzen
  • Two healthy and abundant vegan meals served per day
  • Breathtaking views of the Green Mountains

During this retreat, Shinzen will guide retreatants through the system of practicing mindfulness he designed, Unified Mindfulness. This is a huge opportunity to dive deeply into mindfulness practice with a fantastically inventive teacher, on a beautiful property which is completely immersed in nature.

FAQ:

Q: Do I have to use the neuromodulation tDCS technology?

A: No one is required to use the neuromodulation technology. If you wish, you may choose to not participate. Both options are great!

Q: Is this kind of neurostimulation safe? What does it feel like?

A: E-meditation is a very safe form of neurostimulation. Dr. Short will be using Zendo tDCS devices engineered to the highest engineering and medical standards. To date the technology behind Zendo has been used in over 33,200 sessions and over 2,000 individuals and has not produced any reports of short- or long-term adverse events or irreversible injury. Zendo e-meditation is delivered via adhesive pads that stick to your forehead. These pads slowly deliver a low electrical current that feels like a warm, tingling sensation on the skin. This sensation is not painful (some even enjoy it), and for most people the sensation disappears within the first 3 minutes as your skin adapts to the stimulation. Afterwards, the majority of users don’t even realize it is on. We suggest you assess the low risk before using the devices.

Q: What technologies will we be using? Can I choose?

A: We will be using Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) Zendo devices developed by a company called Bodhi NeuroTech, Inc. There is no financial incentive or sponsorship with Bodhi NeuroTech.
