Event description
Celebrate the year of the boar at the Shinnen Enkai!

About this Event

Shinnen Enkai is JCSM’s annual formal New Year’s banquet where beautiful kimonos and hakamas are on display, worn by guests. Traditional sake is served to welcome you and Japanese dances and other performances are lined up to entertain the crowd. This is always a sold-out event, so grab your tickets now. Silent auction is available, as well as raffle drawings.

The highlight of Shinnen Enkai is honoring individuals in the community who have dedicated their lives to helping perpetuate the Japanese culture.

This year's Nihon Bunka awardees are:

  • RONALD FUKUMOTO - Ron is the president of Fukumoto Engineering. As a member of the Maui Taiko, Ron is also known for this expertise in making and repairing taiko drums - a skill he has been generously passing on to younger practitioners. Ron also has made tremendous contributions to the Boy Scouts community and to JCSM, notably for his years of volunteering his family's ozoni recipe at the annual Oshogatsu mochi pounding event.
  • RINKO JEFFERS - Rinko san is 84 years old and is a Japanese Haiku Poet Master. She was employed for the United Nations in Japan and Africa for 14 years before retiring in 1991 and moving to Maui. In 1992, she started Maui Hototo Gisu Kai with Takako Dickinson. Takako left for mainland but Rinko san continued the club for the past 26 years. In 2010, she started Haiku Poet in English and currently teaches at Paia and Waihee Schools. She also volunteer at Kahului Library.

Nihon Bunka awardees are lifetime members of the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui.
