CalArts Center for New Performance (CNP) and Duende CalArts present the world premiere of SHELTER a movement-based theatrical performance that shares stories of the massive human crisis of unaccompanied minors crossing the U.S. border and passing through the U.S. deportation shelter system, unraveling hidden truths of immigration.
SHELTER es una obra de teatro con moviemiento que comparte historias de las crisis humana masiva de menores no acompañados cruzando la frontera EE.UU., que pasa a través del sistema de deportación y refugio EE.UU. y revela la realidad de la migración.
Shelter is written and conceived by Marissa Chibas, directed by Mexico City-based director Martin Acosta, and choreographed by Fernando Belo.

This evening’s performance is dedicated to the memory of Jose “Jojo” Estrada Jr. The EmBrase Foundation was created to honor his memory and legacy. At the age of 23, Jojo accomplished more than most people do in a lifetime. He was a college graduate from CalArts, a teacher, actor, dancer, visual arts artist, writer, computer programmer, and activist. His ideals, values, and artistic spirit inspire the foundation’s commitment of not abandoning the dreams of underserved children in our communities. PLAN YOUR EVENING:
Families and youth are welcome to this 90 min. dramatic performance, performed primarily in English with some Spanish. The play depicts stories drawn from the experiences of unaccompanied youth refugees and includes stylized depictions of violence and adult themes.
Performance takes place outdoors, on the temporary SHELTER Outdoor Stage, located in Lincoln Park at 3500 N Mission Road, a few steps west of Plaza de la Raza. In the event of rain, SHELTER will perform at Plaza de la Raza 3540 N. Mission Road.
Free street parking on N. Mission Road and E. Valley Blvd.
Dress warmly for evening events and bring sun gear for afternoon performances.
Don't forget to bring blankets and pillows for bleacher seating.
Alcohol is prohibited, but picnicking is encouraged.
