Overview:
Take your backcountry skill development to the next level by learning side-by-side with other women in a positive and encouraging environment. SheJumps and Never Summer Outdoor School present a female-only AIARE Avalanche Level 1 course. Bury your heads in the snow with new friends during the day learning essentials for safe backcountry travel and join SheJumps for various evening activities and fun throughout the weekend. Get ready to jump out into the backcountry this winter!

This course is intended for recreational backcountry skiers looking to develop the tools to get out in the snow on their own. Basic familiarity and experience with backcountry travel and equipment is required. (Please contact mel@shejumps.org if you need to rent equipment.) Participants may have attended some awareness classes or workshops or completed the Avalanche Rescue course, but none are a prerequisite for this course.

Aspiring professionals will need to take the AIARE 1 and Avalanche Rescue as a prerequisite for the Pro 1 course.

The American Institute for Avalanche Safety and Education (AIARE) is a 3-day, 24-hour introduction to avalanche hazards. With a mix of both classroom and field time, the focus of the course is to learn how to recognize hazards, how to manage and minimize them and finally how to respond in case of an emergency. Students will come away from the course having learned:

o How to prepare and plan for a backcountry tour
o How to analyze an avalanche forecast
o How to identify avalanche terrain & avalanche types
o How to recognize hazardous conditions
o Basic snow pack understanding
o Route selection and terrain features
