Event description
We look forward to welcoming you to Sheffield IoT Meetup #3 - 'IoT Cybersecurity'

About this Event

With increasing numbers of Internet connected devices gathering data on all aspects of our lives, as well as controlling physical devices which are Internet enabled, it is important that we protect these devices from tampering and that the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the data they exchange is assured. Encrypted data, integrity of data, and authentication of devices and users are core requirements for secure IoT.

This meeting is for anyone with an interest in IoT (Internet of Things) and data across the region, everyone is welcome. The Meetup is led by Ioetec Ltd and sponsored by Pitch-In at the University of Sheffield.

Location:

The meeting will be held in the Cantor Atrium within Sheffield Hallam University's Cantor Building. (153 Arundel Street, Sheffield, S1 2NU)

Timings:

  • 18:15 – RECEPTION
  • 18:30 – WELCOME & INTRODUCTION TO SHEFFIELD IoT MEETUP
  • 18:35 – TALKS
  • 20:00 – NETWORKING

The meetup direct follows the monthly Things Network gathering at 17:00-18:00. Anyone is welcome to join this discussion regarding Sheffield's LoRaWAN network with the meeting lead, Steve Jubb. Separate tickets available via this booking page.

Speakers: (15 min talks)

1. A local MP will be providing a short introduction regarding the government's view to technology adoption

1. John Clark, Professor of Computer and Information Security, University of Sheffield and Pitch-In Project Lead - Security Challenges for IoT

John will summarise some challenges in IoT cybersecurity and also IoT forensics. These apply to both IoT systems themselves and the evaluation of proposed solutions. The talk will cover briefly threats, solutions and the need to generate multiple credible simulations to serve as test platforms.

2. Dr Jims Marchang, Lecturer/Cyber Lead, Sheffield Hallam University - Blockchain and IoT

Blockchain is a resource-hungry technology. In such a scenario, will a resource constrained IoT network be able to embrace such technology? In fact, Blockchain is going to transform the way IoT is adopted, but if so, how?

3. Mike Faulks. CTO, Ioetec - Securing Data at the EdgeMike will highlight the challenges in securing resource constrained IoT devices at the edge. He will consider the methodologies and definitions of edge node security in a world where device security is often an afterthought.

4. Neil Richardson, Founder Samurai Security - Penetration testing IoT

Samurai Digital Security will present a short talk on their experience of conducting penetration testing of IoT devices. Neil will explore what common issues they find and what can be done to protect IoT devices from these issues.

5. Robin Kennedy, Cyber Security Knowledge Transfer Manager, KTN

Robin will outline CyberASAP - the Cyber Security Academic Startup Accelerator Programme - which helps academics commercialise their cyber ideas. The Year 3 cohort will shortly complete their journey at their Demo Day on 13th Feb and recruitment onto the Year 4 (starting in April) will open shortly.

Time permitting, we will host an open 5 minutes towards the end for anyone wishing to shout about their relevant IoT activity/events/interests.

Our aims are to:

  • Create a vibrant group around IoT and cybersecurity that enables individuals and organisations to share their capability and stimulate discussion and collaboration (sales-type pitches are discouraged).
  • Enable real-world IoT applications, through facilitating technology research/development and commercial progress.
  • Help position Sheffield as a leading IoT centre and lay the groundwork for larger events/activities that reinforce this reputation.

We will follow Sheffield Digital’s code of conduct for meetups.
