Censorship and Surveillance Campaign Training

Training that will equip activists to help stop the Snoopers' Charter and Mass Internet Blocking. Briefings will be followed by practicing how to talk to your MP and other campaign activities.

Open Rights Group needs your help to defeat the latest attacks on internet freedom.

1. The “Snoopers’ Charter” aka Communications Data Bill was announced in the Queen's speech and is about to be published by the government. The bill creates new powers to intercept and collect information about who you talk to online by snooping on your Internet traffic, also covering companies based outside the UK don’t agree to hand over your information. Your encrypted communications via Google, Facebook or Skype will now be open to a potentially quite large number of government employees.

2. Internet censorship. The other government proposal is to force a default mass filtering and blocking of websites, under the excuse of protecting children from porn. There are widespread concerns that this censorship will not deliver on this aim, while creating lots of other problems. Our own research on mobile phone blocking shows this to be the case, with churches and campaigning organisations being wrongly blocked. It's not just a problem of bad classification. Private policing of the internet and free speech is fundamentally wrong.

You can get involved to stop these ill thought policies and we are here to enable you to do so. You do not need any previous experience or knowledge.

The training event will last for around four hours, depending on the availability. First we will give you a good background briefing on the issues to be able to communicate about them and an overview of the campaigns. Then we will do some practical role play training on how to speak to you MP. This will involve forming small groups and practisisng the conversations you will have. We will also cover other campaigning options for those who don't feel inclined to speak to their representatives. Certainly we will need a diversity of tactics and we will welcome your ideas at the workshop.

Open Rights Group Sheffield host monthly meet-ups for anyone interested in digital rights. Topics include copyright, privacy, freedom of expression, open data, censorship, digital inclusion, electronic democracy and internet law. The format is a short presentation to introduce a particular issue followed by group discussion.

Training provided by the Open Rights Group Founded in 2005 by 1,000 digital activists, ORG has become the UK’s leading voice defending freedom of expression, privacy, innovation, consumer rights and creativity on the net.  Getting into the political trenches in the UK and EU, we mobilise our supporters to stop bad laws. Working closely with other campaign groups, we lobby government and talk to the media whenever our rights are threatened.  ORG is a non-profit company funded by donors, mostly by people like you. We depend on regular contributions to run and win our campaigns.
