Description

Shavuot: “Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.”

Saturday, May 19 from 7:30 – 9:00 PM

In Hebrew, Shavuot means “weeks” and refers to the seven weeks between Passover and the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. This ancient festival marked the end of the barley harvest when Israelites brought agricultural offerings to the Temple in Jerusalem.

Today, it is a celebration of Torah and many Jews stay up all night to study. It is also a holiday marked by celebrating those who have chosen to be Jewish. Traditionally, the Book of Ruth is read during services. Ruth, a young Moabite woman, adopted the Jewish faith and people as her own and is considered the model for all those who “choose” Judaism via conversion.

This Shavuot, we will honor all of the Jews by choice in our own community and listen as some of them share their stories and experiences And, of course, we will be sure to observe the custom of eating cheesecakes and other dairy desserts!
