Why Participate in this Training?
Join us for the Shasta College Safe Zone "Train the Trainer" session on Friday, February 3rd from 9-5 on the Shasta College Redding Campus! This session will provide free comprehensive training on LGBT identities and issues for those interested in conducting a successful Safe Zone training of your own.
Participants become certified Safe Zone trainers that are then qualified to hold trainings that produce Safe Zone Allies - individuals that can be approached with questions, information, and support.
What is Safe Zone?
Safe Zone is a Shasta College program started by students who saw the need to improve the campus and community climate for LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) students, staff and community members. This "Train the Trainers" session is for campus and community members interested in hosting a Safe Zone training of their own! The Safe Zone program is designed to nurture Allies of different backgrounds, attitudes, and beliefs with the goal of promoting safe and inclusive communities. We “assume goodwill” for all trainees. We do not expect Allies to be perfect, we only insist that they try.The training is designed to touch the mind, as well as the heart. Through discussion and activities, we explore:
- Ally Self-Assessment
- Privilege Self Assessment
- LGBTQA Stereotypes and Internalized Homophobia
- Who makes up the LGBTQ+ Community?
- Gender 101/Authentic Gender Model
- Sexual Orientation 101/Spectrums of Sexuality
- Coming Out
- Key Events in LGBTQ+ History and Current Events
- Revisiting Privilege
- Understanding LGBTQ+ Microaggressions
- Everyday Allyship
