SharePoint 2013 ships with various site templates and it can be confusing to determine how to customize each. In this part, we'll take a look at various site templates and common elements around them in terms of branding of the site.
Customization options: SharePoint Designer versus Visual Studio
SharePoint technologies consist of various tools used for customizations. In this part, we'll take a look at two of the most common customization options and see some of the advantages in terms of using SharePoint Designer versus Visual Studio for various business scenarios.
The basics: Starting to change the look of SharePoint 2013 sites
We will be looking at key branding artifacts such as masterpages, stylesheets, page layouts and how they relate to each other in terms of branding. We'll also take a look at some of the handy tools to help you with branding.
Creating a custom look (Theme)
Custom look (formerly referred to as Themes) in SharePoint 2013 is a first layer of branding customization. In this part of the session, we'll take a look at what's involved in creating your own theme and using it on the site.

Master page is a next step in terms of complexity for SharePoint 2013 branding and is a key to applying corporate brand in intranet/extranet and other types of SharePoint sites. In this session, we'll focus on master page customizations and related content.

Publishing sites use page layouts for granular page look and feel and are essential for creating branding for a corporate intranet or a SharePoint public site; page layouts are the focus for this session.

Applying a custom user interface to a SharePoint 2013 site
In this part of the session, we'll go through an exercise on how to use all of the branding components and use them to transfer branding from your existing site to a SharePoint 2013 site.
