Class Outline

Introduction to SharePoint 2013 Administration
We start with an overview to SharePoint and a discussion of the various versions and editions of SharePoint and the features included in each. We then transition into a discussion on what is new and different in this latest SharePoint 2013 wave of SharePoint products and technologies, specifically focusing on changes as they relate to administration.

Working with the SharePoint Central Administration Tool
The most important tool for a SharePoint administrator is the web-based SharePoint Central Administration (SPCA) tool, and this section of the training focuses on understanding how SPCA can be used and what types of administration can be done from the tool itself. The trainer takes you through all of the various sections in SPCA, focusing on real world administration and common tasks that you’ll have to perform to administer SharePoint.

PowerShell Administration of SharePoint
PowerShell as a tool for SharePoint administrators is extremely useful, and can be used to automate repetitive tasks or even to script the entire creation of all components within a SharePoint farm. This module focuses on how PowerShell can be used to administer SharePoint, with real world PowerShell scripting examples given to demonstrate functionality and to help the attendees become more familiar with using PowerShell for SharePoint administration.

SQL Server Administration and Maintenance
One often neglected area of Administration within a SharePoint environment is the data tier running on Microsoft SQL Server. This module focuses on explaining everything that SharePoint administrators will need to know to administer their SQL Servers that are used for SharePoint databases. Covered are basic tasks such as database maintenance, backups and log shrinking, and sizing and optimization of SharePoint databases. The final section of this module will focus on some advanced features included in SQL Server 2012 that allow for new high availability and disaster recovery options, including an in-depth look at SQL 2012 AlwaysOn Availability Groups for SharePoint. In addition, other advanced features such as the new SharePoint 2013 Shredded Storage and Remote BLOB Storage (RBS) are also discussed.

IIS Manager and General Windows Server Administration
The final module in this training focuses on administration of the Windows Server components of a SharePoint environment, including Internet Information Services (IIS) administration and other tools that are used for OS-level administration. This module also covers some of the proactive monitoring and alerting capabilities administrators can take advantage of to help to ensure that a SharePoint farm runs smoothly.
