Event description

Description

As vacancy rates shrink and prices soar—communities are looking at strategies to increase housing options for those that want to cohabitate. The concept of shared housing is not new—in fact, most people have lived in a shared environment at one time or another throughout the course of their life. Think back to childhood—when you shared space with your parent(s)—or college with your dorm roommate. While the concept of sharing space with other people is quite common—it is a fairly new endeavor in the business of housing formerly homeless individuals and families.

This learning clinic will take place over two days. It will provide an understanding around promising practices for the development and implementation of a shared housing program. The focus will include strategies for exploring the option of shared housing, engagement in services, and long-term stabilization within this housing model. Additionally, we will explore landlord recruitment, matching, subsidies, appropriate staffing and organizational restructuring.

Our Trainer will be Kris Freed. Kris has over 18 years of experience in homelessness and substance abuse services and policy. In addition to her work at OrgCode, Kris is the Vice President of Programs for LA Family Housing, a large non-profit services and real estate development agency located just north of Los Angeles. She specializes in designing homeless services with an emphasis on families and coordinating service delivery across multiple systems. Kris leverages her analytical and managerial skills to effectively manage millions of dollars in budget and contractual requirements. Under her leadership, LA Family Housing has expanded family programming to support a 70% increase in the number of families receiving supportive services and housing over the past three years.

Kris was also integrally involved in the development, implementation and roll-out of the Coordinated Entry System (CES) for Families in Los Angeles and is currently directing CES for Families in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys. Committed to improving the quality of life for families in crisis, Kris often conducts local and national trainings on best practices in effective service delivery, including providing a workshop to Orange County service providers in 2014 on CES Coordination and Implementation. She holds a BA in Sociology and a Master’s in Public Administration from California State University, Northridge.
