Event description

Description

Hear the Washington, DC, premiere of Ye Xiaogang’s Colorful Sutra Banner, inspired by the composer’s memory of prayer flags across the Tibetan landscape. The piece is performed by the same artists who played its American premiere, at New York’s Lincoln Center in April 2017. Completing the program are Mendelsohn’s Quartet in E-flat Major and Franck’s Piano Quintet in F Minor.

Xiaogang is artistic director of the Beijing Modern Music Festival, Asia’s largest new-music event. He was honored at Lincoln Center in 2013 with a concert of his works performed by the Detroit Philharmonic. Making its twenty-fifth appearance in the Freer|Sackler concert series, the renowned Shanghai Quartet has been praised by the Washington Post for delivering a “wonderfully ferocious and illuminating performance.” The Boston Globe recently selected Gloria Chien (;photo above) as one of its “superior pianists of the year,” citing her as an artist “who appears to excel in everything.”

This concert is part of the twenty-fifth season of the Bill and Mary Meyer Concert Series and presented in conjunction with Encountering the Buddha: Art and Practice across Asia.
