Shane Harris Community Christmas Day Event 2020
Event Information
About this Event
2020 may have altered how we do the party on Christmas morning but it hasn't taken the annual event away from the people! We have put together a COVID-19 safe drive and walk through party together to keep health a priority while making sure your Christmas is special! The Shane Harris Community Christmas Day Event is annually focused on San Diego's foster children and families who fall on hard times during the holidays however this year we are seeking to serve even more people. This year we will serve foster families, military families and families hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Shane Harris started this breakfast four years ago because of his experience growing up in the child welfare system in which he encountered 13 years in foster care, the loss of both of his parents and the challenges of the many holidays he spent nearly alone. He wanted to make sure that no other kid goes through the kind of loneliness he went through as a child in foster care. We ask that you register to attend this event and you will be added on to the list as a registered guest.
Please see below information pertaining to how this event is going to look:
1. The event will be held outside and families will walk through the distribution area in Celebration Court. The Jacobs Center has already identified markings outside from previous food distributions at the facility. Additional markings will be made in anticipation of the line of individual and families that will be waiting to approach the distribution area.
2. The line will form a single point of entry and there will be a single area for exit after receiving the gifts. UPDATE: We are planning on serving in a drive-up format as well to serve most of the guests of the event. We will not serve more than 300 walkups in a line. We estimate that we will serve 500 guests in a drive through format now.
3. Registration is required and those that have registered will be served first. Those that have not registered will be allowed to wait and will be subsequently registered via a touchless registration system.
4. San Diego Police & Fire will support traffic control efforts, as they do for current food distributions at the facility.
5. Volunteers will be walking the line to ensure proper distancing, providing temperature checks, and provide masks to anyone who does not have one. Those that have been screened will receive wristbands to indicate they have been through the screening process.
6. Families that arrive in a vehicle can send a designated individual to wait in line should they choose until their family gets closer to the distribution area at which point the entire family will undergo the screening. Up to 30 volunteers are anticipated to be working the outside line and premises to ensure social distancing among the crowd.
7. There will be clickers to monitor capacity and the registration system will account for who actually attended the event.
8. There will be no hot food distribution at the event. Every attendee will be provided a gift card to the following places to get their meal: McDonalds, Jack in a Box, and Chick Fil A. We thank our food partners for stepping up with our organization to make this change.
9. All attendees will also receive a non-perishable box of food to assist them through the holidays thanks to our partners. Each attendee will receive a card signed by Shane Harris with their gift card inside taped on top of the box of non-perishable foods.
10. There will be porta-potties and handwashing stations outside in three different areas. Indoor bathrooms will only be made available on an emergency or family need basis. Volunteers will monitor the indoor bathrooms and outside porta-potties. Those volunteers will sanitize sink, door handles and other highly touched surfaces. Volunteers will also provide hand sanitizer to each attendee in line.
11. We will use sanitation bleach/alcohol wipes on all highly touched surface such as doorknobs & handles of the indoor bathroom and outside porta-potties after each use.
