Shambles: Found Object Talismans for Thrifty Witches
Sat, May 27, 2017, 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM EDT
Taught by Anna Grindrod-Feeny:
I am an eclectic witch and fourth generation intuitive card reader who began dabbling in the occult in a (fruitless) attempt to be “edgy" when I was a teenager. I’ve always had a fascination with witches - both in fiction and in real life - so it was inevitable that I would eventually give in and embrace a magic-driven lifestyle. My short attention span, tight budget, and near-obsessive desire to collect anything shiny and abandoned led me to eschew more traditional spells in favor of a more experimental approach, and most of my spells are designed on the fly and include lost keys, pennies, playing cards, and other treasures I find during my day job as a dog walker. When I’m not working magic or reading tarot cards, I can be found on the endless audition circuit that is the life of an actor in NYC.
In the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett, a Shambles is a bit of on-the-fly magic created with whatever a witch happens to have in her pocket. Similarly, this workshop will focus on working with objects from the world around you. It’s amazing what you can find in your own lodging or even on the streets of New York City - feathers, twigs, marbles, pennies, lost keys, shells, beads, broken bits of jewelry… all of this can be used in your spell crafting!
Together we’ll get creative to craft talismans and spell bottles out of such discarded knickknacks. I will provide jars and ribbons as well as a wide variety of objects I’ve found during my own wanderings, but feel free to bring anything you would like to contribute or add to your very own talisman.
