Self-With-Others’ is a practical and precise approach to training anyone who uses their body to communicate – which of course includes all of us, performer and non-performer. It is used regularly to train actors, dancers, circus performers, musicians, improvisors, clowns, teachers, inter-disciplinary artists and others, at every level from beginner to elite and at every age, from emerging to senior artist.
NIKE IMORU CASTING IS OFFERING four opportunities to encounter Self-With-Others. SWO is the unique, joyous, physical approach to performer-training that John Britton has been developing for over 20 years. SWO lies at the heart of John's work as a teacher, director and performer and is the foundation of the training at The DUENDE School of Ensemble Physical Theatre. SWO is a holistic approach to liberating and disciplining a performer’s expressive body, whatever the art form or style of performance the performer works in. SWO is based on a suite of interconnected principles, the first of which is that a performer must hunt, continually, for pleasure in his/her work.
Who are these workshops for? John teaches across disciplines - theatre, dance, film, circus, clowning, site-specific, improvisation and in non-performance contexts. He teaches from elite to amateur levels. The work develops fearless, charismatic, creative, responsive live performers able to work collaboratively with others. The training is open to anyone (over the age of 16) who is keen to engage physically and energetically in developing their own work. It is an active training which requires mental and physical flexibility and fitness. It involves physical contact and willingness to enjoy oneself. Unduly miserable people need not apply.
Friday 2nd December
In this final workshop with John Britton, Casting Director Nike Imoru challenges John to develop a scene from Shakespeare with a group of actors. Nike will then coach those same actors to do the same scene for the camera. We will examine in forensic detail what impulses, thoughts, actions, physical and emotional adjustments need to happen to take acting from stage to screen; the screen to the stage, using a theatre director and tv/movie casting director. This will be a 4 hour workshop for participants.
