Event description
Learn the history of the SHAKE QUEENS with award winning performer and burlesque history expert Bebe Bardeaux!

About this event

The forthcoming book "SHAKE QUEENS" explores the history of old-school shake dancing, a style of movement commonly associated with burlesque performers of color in the 1930s-1970s. While definitions vary, shake dancing has always been marked by wild displays of sexual freedom, abandon, and unbridled sensuality.

Participants will learn the socio-historical background of shake dancing in theory and practice, including the international, multicultural origins of burlesque and subsequent cultural appropriation ingrained within the art form. Participants will also learn about the rise and transformation of American shake dancing as led by Black femmes, from minstrel shows and vaudeville, to Black nightclub and theatre history, all the way up to modern present-day strip clubs.

This class is a lecture class so no special clothing required. Feel free to bring a notebook and pen if you like to take notes!

BIPOC Students: FREE

General Admission: $20

This class is part of the Black History Month Workshop Series curated by Sophie Sucré at The Philadelphia Burlesque Academy.
