Event description

Description

Historically, silence has often been linked to negative feelings, such as suppression or

loneliness. But more recently, there has been a wave of interest in silence as having more

positive associations. Ancient Eastern practices and Western scientific research come

together to show that silence, used in the right way, can raise self-awareness, enhance

feelings of well-being, give space to step back and appreciate life, as well as a simple tool for

peace and stillness. This evening, we explore the benefits of different aspects of silence - and

how to find it.

Speaker: Sarah Cavanagh is a primary school teacher who has been meditating with the

Brahma Kumaris since 1994. She has led a variety of courses and activities designed to

facilitate relaxation and self-development in Brighton and Inner Space, Oxford and for the

last five years in Newcastle upon Tyne. Sarah is currently studying for an MSc in Psychology

with a focus on how the brain works and on mindfulness and meditation. Her thesis is on

Silence.
