A story salon featuring leading voices in the fight for environmental justice

About this event

How do we mainstream the story about plastic, climate, and environmental justice? Join us for People Over Plastic’s (POP) first story salon with leading voices in the fight for a more just and equitable future. With 99% of plastic coming from fossil fuels today, POP believes conversations about the climate crisis AND the plastic crisis must center people of color and indigenous voices who are most impacted from it. Hear stories from renowned environmental attorney and thought leader Patrice Simms, river protector and Trump border wall plaintiff Tricia Cortez, and community organizer defeating big oil - Goldman Prize winner Sharon Lavigne. The salon style conversation will be moderated by globally recognized communicator and plastic pollution expert Shilpi Chhotray.

Sharon Lavigne, a retired special needs teacher in St. James Parish, Louisiana is the founder of the faith based environmental justice group RISE St. James. She was named the 2021 North American winner of the Goldman Environmental Prize for fighting to keep multibillion dollar chemical plants out of her already polluted community in the heart of an area dubbed “Cancer Alley.”

In her work to protect Laredo’s lifeblood, the Rio Grande river, she defeated the Trump administration’s plans to build a border wall through it. In 2019, Tricia was named Laraedoan of the year.
