Our amazing guest speaker, Avi Mayer: Why the Kotel Crisis Was the Straw that Broke the Diaspora's Back

Avi Mayer is the international spokesman of The Jewish Agency for Israel, the largest Jewish nonprofit organization in the world, and its chairman, Natan Sharansky. He also maintains an extensive online presence and is frequently cited by government officials, journalists, advocacy organizations, and many others.

In 2013, Avi was named by The Algemeiner as one of the “Jewish 100”—the top one hundred people positively influencing Jewish life—along with U.S. President Barack Obama, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and other leading figures. In 2016, he was named the third most influential person on ‘Jewish Twitter’ by JTA, just behind Prime Minister Netanyahu. He was recently named one of the most influential English-speaking immigrants in Israeli politics by the Jerusalem Post.

A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Maryland, Avi has worked for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs; the Embassy of Israel in Washington, D.C.; Hillel International; and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

Born in New York and raised in Jerusalem and Maryland, Avi served in the Israel Defense Forces as a spokesman to the foreign press. He lives in Jerusalem.

Avi will disucss the Kotel crisis, the impact it has had on Israeli-Diaspora relations and Jewish identity in the diaspora and why this should matter to all Jews in Israel and the Diaspora.
