Sonorous Figures (Program 2 of the SFCD Summer Dance Series) is the third creation co-directed by choreographer Christian Burns and musician Donald White. Sonorous Figures tells the story of a fallen muse whose eventual ascent back to inspiration is depicted through the character of a downtrodden tramp inspired by a variety of sources depicting the depression era such as John Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath, paintings by Edward Hopper, photographs by Dorothea Lange and the performances of Emmett Kelly.

The San Francisco Conservatory of Dance presents the Fifth Annual Summer Dance Series. This annual series showcases daring new dance work by both emerging and established choreographers. In 2014, the series features pieces that center around live music and extensive collaboration with musicians. Program 1 will feature Weee-Oooo, We You by Stephanie Salts and Monica Gonzalez. Program 2 will feature Sonorous Figures by Christian Burns and Donald White. For the first time, SFCD will present these performances in the intimate setting of the Conservatory’s own studios, giving audience members the opportunity to see the work up close and in the environment of its creation.

The San Francisco Conservatory of Dance is structured on the belief that the best way to develop young dance artists is to establish a trusting environment in which highly motivated students come together with highly motivated artists--dancers, choreographers, and musicians--to give of themselves generously, share and respect one another's points of view, augment and refine dance skills, experiment freely, and collaborate in the creation of diverse dance works. SFCD provides multi-disciplinary training in classical ballet and contemporary dance for advanced dancers through a year-round program and summer intensives.
