Event description

Description

Dear New Local,

I remember the first day I moved to San Francisco (I won't even pretend it was that long ago!) I mixed up MUNI and BART, walked the wrong way up Market St, relied on everyone else to suggest places to go eat, didn't know where to volunteer, and knew there was a ton of history and context around if only I knew where to find it.

If you're like me, you're ready to call San Francisco home. But it takes a while for living here to turn into feeling at home here. And it can take even longer to move from feeling at home to feeling like someone able to contribute back to SF to keep it vibrant, inclusive, spontaneous, and story-filled.

So that's what citizen onboarding is all about. It's a half-day sampler course of the city. A little bit of history, a little bit of local lingo, a lot of swapping recommendations. We even take care of some of the civic engagement basics: if you haven't figured out local transit, library cards, museum discounts, and voting registration before you get here, you will by the time you leave. Plus, we've got treats from my favorite tea shop in town to kick off our morning.

Citizen onboarding is pure passion project right now. It's still in its early stages. So get excited: this experience is about you, and your feedback will keep paying it forward for the next bunch.

Can't wait to see you there.

P.S. Our meeting site is an old Victorian Gold Rush mansion in Hayes Valley. You should plan to eat beforehand, and we'll have snacks throughout the morning to keep you going. It helps a ton if you're able to contribute towards materials, but we never want anyone to be excluded by cost of attendance; if you need a fully subsized ticket, email the organizer and we'll get you set up.

Who hosts this?
We are the New Locals. We work in local government, tech, and nonprofits in the Bay Area. The New Locals is a new organization, and these onboardings are our first experiments in creating greater local engagement. Your participation and feedback will help guide how we grow next.

Your tour guide is Jess, who works in local government in the Bay Area. Among friends, she is notorious for experimenting with ways to get people more involved in their local communities. That's why New Locals partners with local residents, business owners, and community organizations wherever possible. Her (nerdy) favorite part of Hayes Valley: Haight & Octavia, the site of old protests against the attempted freeway straight through the neighborhood.
