The Sexuality Education Summit: How to Create a Comprehensive K-12 Program for Healthy and Equitable Sexual Development That Leads to Student Well-Being and a Thriving Institution

Sexuality is fundamental to who we are as human beings and integral to every child's intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development from the time of birth. However, even in 21st Century education, the great majority of elite, California Independent schools remain 3-7 years behind in teaching even basic knowledge about human anatomy and reproduction. As educators we can turn the tide and truly provide the comprehensive sexuality education that teaches students the critical thinking skills needed to successfully navigate their complicated sexual landscape.

The two-day Sexuality Education Summit will provide a vision and framework as well as teach educators and administrators the skills necessary to create a comprehensive K-12 human sexuality education program.

Led by Sarah Huss, Director of Human Development and Parent Education at Campbell Hall, and Dana Gonzalez, Assistant Upper School Director at Brentwood School, the Summit will feature presentations by nationally recognized Human Development educators and thought leaders including, Deborah Roffman, author of Talk to Me First: Everything You Need to Know to Become Your Child’s Go-to Person About Sex and Mike Riera, Head of Brentwood School and one of the country’s foremost authorities on understanding children and teenagers.

Learning Objectives:

  • Foundations of Sexuality Education Pedagogy: understanding how and why sexality edcuation has evolved and the effective teaching methods that meet student’s real needs at all ages
  • Curricular Scope and Sequence: developmentally sound curriculum and examples of lesson plans, K-12
  • Leadership Best Practices: skills for administrators in leading comprehensive sexuality education programs and creating authentic partnerships with families
