She previously time as a social worker in an assisted living and was based on the memory care floor. Workshop Description

This workshop entails a comprehensive review of Sexuality and Older Adults and provides a conceptual framework for social workers, case managers, and other health practitioners to effectively provide support, education, and advocacy to clients, patients, families, and administrators. As the aging population increases both in census and in length of life, the “uncomfortable” and often “taboo” subject of sexuality is rarely discussed or even acknowledged. Yet as sexuality is part of the human experience, many clinicians constantly encounter situations involving sexuality and older adults with a woeful lack of knowledge. This workshop will aide the practitioner by destigmatizing the subject of sexuality, teaching tools and skills for successfully managing situations that arise with clients in relation to sexuality, and developing advocacy techniques for maximizing sexual rights in a dignified manner.

Workshop Objectives:

As a result of this workshop, participants will:

  • Be better prepared to initiate and address the subject of sexuality with older adults, their families, and administrators or other persons of power.

  • Become familiar with obstacles older adults face in their sexual lives such as STIs, diseases and medication interaction, online dating, ect.

  • Develop a basic knowledge of sexuality and dementia in relation to capacity and consent, facility protocol, and right to self determination vs duty to keep safe

  • Learn tools for advocacy within the various systems- e.g. family or facility system- to ensure the sxual rights of older adults are protected.
