Event description
Sexual Assault Investigation Best Practices: The Alaska SAKI Project (Juneau)

About this Event

Members of the SAKI working group will describe the SAKI process, including the reasons behind the initiative and the results of the testing of the sexual assault kits. Best practices will be identified from both the working group collaborations and the renewed investigations into cases where kits had not been tested; such as screening, evidence collection, interviewing and report writing.

The Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) is a federal grant program designed to address national backlogs of untested sexual assault kits. The Alaska State Troopers (AST) received a SAKI grant to test previously-untested sexual assault kits in Alaska. Since 2016, this grant has been used to inventory 700 sexual assault kits from AST cases; 568 kits were submitted to a private lab for testing. As part of the SAKI grant, a multidisciplinary working group was formed to develop best practices for investigating sexual assaults.
