Writing sex scenes can cause any writer anxiety, no matter how experienced. And why wouldn’t that be the case, when sex itself creates tension? In this Craft Session, we’ll directly address (and shed) this anxiety, investigating our own reliance on clichés and our responsibility when it comes to writing about taboo subject matter. We’ll approach writing about sex from a craft perspective. Getting to know your character’s sexuality is a way to gain insight into their psyche and develop them fully.
Participants will close-read published examples of great scenes (with not-always-great sex), discuss the craft tools being used, then practice applying those tools to their own sex scenes with in-class writing exercises.
