About this event
Maybe its been in the loft for a few years but you never got it out of the box?
Learning a new hobby can be difficult on your own so why not join my “Sewing for Total Beginners” workshop and learn all the basics in a friendly, fun and non-judgemental environment?
Details:
One Day Workshop (plus 2 weeks FREE email support after the workshop in case you forget anything!)
Sunday 31st July 2022
10am-4pm
Venue: Hawkinge Village Hall, 91 Canterbury Road, Hawkinge, CT18 7BS (parking available on site and sited on a bus route)
What we will cover:
I will take you through all the basics - this will include topics such as identifying the basic parts of your sewing machine, including feet and accessories, choosing the right fabric, thread, what you need in your sewing kit, basic pattern reading, and how to use your machine to sew in straight lines, curves and corners. (I always say if you can sew a straight line you can sew anything!) We will practise these techniques and then we will move on to making a simple tote bag. We will cover how to cut out your fabric (using both a rotary cutter and scissors) and how to sew it together leaving you with a beautiful memento and plenty of new skills to practise at home! This course is packed with helpful hints and tips to help you get the best start to your sewing journey!
This workshop is not geared towards any one type of sewing to another - it will suit you depending on whether you want to move on to making clothes, toys, bags, quilting - anything! Don’t worry if you don’t know anything at all about sewing - that's what this workshop is for.
To attend you will need:
A working sewing machine with a needle and bobbin.
Optional:
If you have a basic sewing kit, please bring it with you - pins, fabric scissors, unpicker, tape measure etc.
Notepad and pen in case you want to make notes
I will provide you with:
Suitable fabric for your tote bag and matching thread (if you want to bring your own, please get in touch before the workshop and I can give you advice on what to buy)
Quick reference guide and written instructions for the tote bag we will cover in the workshop to try again at home if you like.
In addition, you can contact me with any questions via email you may have for up to 2 weeks after the workshop in case you get stuck.
Spaces are limited to no more than 5 students so you're not waiting around for an answer to any questions you may have. The workshop lasts from 10am-4pm with a break for lunch (please bring a packed lunch with you, otherwise there is a small Tesco just along the road.)
Cancellations
Unfortunately we are unable to offer any refunds in respect of cancellations unless we have had to cancel the workshop in which case you will be entitled to a full refund. In the event of cancellation we will give as much notice as we possibly can.
About the teacher:
My name is Marie and I have been sewing for about 4.5 years. In 2019 I set up a business making bags from upcycled fabric - Remade Reloved. I have also made dresses from upcycled fabric for local photoshoots. I have run dozens of training courses and workshops in my day job, and I have taught friends and family to sew as well as running online “Introduction to Sewing” classes during lockdown.
