In this structured and fully guided four week course you will learn

  • How to use an overlocker for a professional finish
  • How to insert eyelets
  • Sewing seams evenly
  • Finishing the neckline, sleeves and Hem.

Week one - Introduction to fabrics and basic sewing

The class will begin with a 20 min tutorial about fabrics. We concentrate on looking at the different properties of natural, synthetic and semi synthetic fabrics .

This interesting and informative session will really help you to make good choices when choosing fabric for futures projects. You will then be shown how to thread up your machine with thread on the top and bottom of your machine. You will practice straight stitching and when you are confident you will be able practise doing a rolled hem and a French seam.

You will have the opportunity to use and get familiar with the overlocker which you will be using during the coming weeks. Finally when you are feeling confident you will make a handy hair scrunchie to take home.

(I promise you this will be the first you make of many, they are so easy!!)

Week 2 - Cutting out the dress and assembling the top part.

Use pattern provided to cut out the fabric parts of your dress.

Pin the edges of the top part of the dress together

Join by sewing the back seam, side seams and the shoulder seams.

You will then overlock your seams for a neat and secure finish (Overlocking stops the seams from fraying and also looks nice.)

Week three - Assembling the bottom of the dress

Assemble the skirt by pinning back seam and side seams.

Create inserted pockets in the side seam.

Attach the top and the bottom of the dress together at the waist line.

Mark and insert brass eyelets on the front waistline

Week four - Adding the draw-string channel and finishing

Make the channel for the draw-string

Thread the draw string thought the channel and eyelets

Try the dress on and mark hem line and sleeve length,

Hem the dress and sleeves.

This is a 4 week course, with limited places to ensure everyone receives quality tuition. Each class lasts 2 hours so there is no rush and you can take your time getting used to the processes and asking as many questions as you like. This course is the perfect opportunity to get to grips with many different sewing techniques in a fun relaxing atmosphere.
