Event Details

Join the Tennessee delegation to the 41st Annual Joint Meeting of the Southeast U.S./Japan and Japan-U.S Southeast Associations (SEUS-Japan), October 18-20, 2018 in Tokyo, Japan. This prestigious gathering of global business leaders celebrates longstanding economic and cultural ties between Japan and the Southeastern United States, and offers delegates unparalleled opportunities to forge new ones.

The 2018 conference will feature outstanding speakers and a series of unique networking experiences, including the participation of Tennessean and U.S. Ambassador to Japan Bill Hagerty.

Created in 1976, the Southeast U.S./Japan Association was established to promote trade, investment, understanding, and friendship between Japan and U.S. member states. Today, member states include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. A Japanese counterpart, the Japan-U.S. Southeast Association, is composed of Japan's top business leaders and government officials.

An annual conference between the two associations is held on a rotational basis in Japan and the Southeastern U.S. Also on a rotational basis, each of the seven states serves as "Host and Co-host State" for a two-year term and assumes leadership of SEUS/Japan during that period. South Carolina hosted the meeting in 2017, and Japan hosts this year.  Tennnessee served as host in 1982, 1996 and 2010.

The annual conferences attract state governors, corporate presidents and CEOs, and top economic development and business leaders from the seven southeastern states. Some 400-500 individuals participate in this annual event. Meetings include top business and political leadership, including Ambassadors and Consul Generals, all representing the most significant aspects of the economic relationship between Japan and the Southeast.

Japan-America Society of Tennessee

Established in 2000 to promote friendly relations and cultural understanding between the people of the state of Tennessee and Japan, the Japan-America Society of Tennessee, Inc. (JAST) is a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation, funded by individual and corporate membership fees and grants from government institutions and private foundations. Serving as Honorary Co-Chairs of the Society are The Honorable Bill Haslam, Governor of Tennessee and the Consul General of Japan in Nashville. Headquartered in Nashville, JAST is overseen by a 25-member volunteer Board of Directors from leading businesses, institutions and organizations from across the state.

JAST has as its Mission to create mutual economic benefit by facilitating prosperous relationships with Japan. This mission guides our work to deliver high value outreach initiatives that sustain and grow relationships, ignite commerce and secure a vibrant bilateral economic future for Tennessee and Japan.

Signature outreach programs and support for partner-led initiatives across the state drive JAST's role to enhance Tennessee's reputation as a welcoming environment and premier business location for Japanese-owned companies.

Annual networking receptions and support for Tennessee's business delegations to the Southeast-U.S. Japan Association Conferences each year are highlights of the organization's activities. JAST-supported programs also include the Mitsui USA Scholarships in Tennessee Program and a variety of regional events and cultural festivals, including the Nashville Cherry Blossom Festival, as well as occasional gatherings that focus on specific aspects of business, culture and society, including lectures, seminars, exhibitions, music performances, round-table discussions and other social and networking events.

JAST members gain access to business, educational, cultural and social programs, with members of both the Japanese and American communities. Additionally, membership allows Japanese firms a way to contribute to the cultural fabric of the state, to show community interest, involvement and concern outside of Japanese circles, and to meet American business people who are doing business or are interested in Japan. Non-Japanese firms also gain opportunities to make friends and do business with Japanese residents across the state.
