Event description

Description

Title: Coordination of surface elevation table-marker horizon (SET-MH) maintenance, expansion, and data collection in the eastern Gulf of Mexico

Goal and Objectives

Goal

Develop the foundation for a robust network of collaboration and communication among SET-MH practitioners in the eastern Gulf of Mexico

Objectives

  • Facilitate communication among SET-MH practitioners

  • To build collaborative networks to seek funding and develop cooperative agreements for long-term maintenance and to coordinate on SET-MH network expansion

  • To discuss the potential for a common SET-MH data format and repository for the Gulf of Mexico

  • To identify mechanisms for maintaining communication and coordination moving forward

Target audience: Federal, state, and local agencies and departments and individual researchers that maintain SET-MH stations in coastal Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.

Abstract

Data provided by surface elevation table-marker horizon (SET-MH) stations provide critical information for assessing coastal habitat vulnerability to pressures like sea level rise, and help inform management and conservation objectives for these habitats. SET-MH stations have often been installed to address local or site-specific research questions; however, there is much that could be gained from SET-MH coordination and communication at the regional level. Given that SET-MH stations are often established to address specific management and/or research questions, there has been limited communication, collaboration, or coordination between researchers and agencies that are installing and maintaining SET-MH stations. This leads to a reduced scope of data synthesis across the Gulf region. This workshop will bring together coastal science and management professionals who practice installation, maintenance, and collection of SET-MH data within the eastern Gulf of Mexico region (Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida). The workshop will focus on generating an exchange of ideas regarding SET-MH methods and data maintenance; provide opportunities to collaborate on funding, future installations, and long-term maintenance; and discuss the potential for a common SET-MH data repository. This workshop will act as a foundational step in developing a robust collaborative network among SET practitioners in the eastern Gulf of Mexico to enhance data acquisition and analysis and improve natural resource management and conservation decision-making.
