FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 20TH, 2013 / 10P-3A / 21+ ONLY

Isn't it kind of disappointing that Jimmy Kimmel fooled us all with that Twerk video shit? I think it's because we want to watch people, on fire, shake their ass. Well on Friday, 9/20/13 at 1015 Folsom you might get to experience the next best thing. Kool Keith, the godfather of sex rap is joined by TWRK, the biggest and most talented booty bass production team in the world…. on their first tour. 1015 and Trap City worked hard to bring you a lineup that's diverse, so the heads that would rather groove to a different beat can catch superstar UK garage stars MOSCA + T.WILLIAMS in the hosted Soundpieces room. But wait, there's more! Lightyear, nu-disco and house prodigy, returns to San Francisco with the Lights Down Low Djs Richie Panic and Sleazemore. Lastly, Kool Keith will judge an outrageous on stage twerking competition for a large cash prize. Expect nothing but a crazy, wild time at the club on Friday September 20th!

How I make music: T. Williams

KOOL KEITH

An original member of New York's new-school pioneers the Ultramagnetic MCs, Keith Thornton is best known as a solo rapper. His signature style is stream-of-consciousness lyrical flow and complex vocals, two skills that earn him a perennial nod from the underground hip-hop community. The average Kool Keith album is peppered with bizarre, disjointed, even delusional or disassociated themes, concepts, and references. Nearly all of his albums incorporate a satirical dislike for more commercialized strains of hip-hop, as well as major record labels.

In 1996, Keith revealed in an interview that he was working on the next Dr. Octagon album. Tracks were also recorded with Automator under the Big Willie Smith moniker which were not released until Automator's 2000 "A Much Better Tomorrow" LP. Eventually the Big Willie Smith alias was changed to Willie Biggs, possibly as a reaction to Will Smith's Big Willie Style album, and this is the moniker used on Keith's first true solo release, 1997's Sex Style, although a few references to Smith remain. This album, produced mostly by Kutmasta Kurt, was the first to fully exemplify Keith's fascination with pornography and sex in general.

Released soon after the independent First Come First Served was the major-label effort Black Elvis/Lost in Space, (they were intended to be released simultaneously) which featured Keith finding yet another persona in Black Elvis. While the Dr. Dooom record was produced with the minimalist beats and production work of Kutmasta Kurt, Lost In Space featured much more complex lyrical stylings and deeper, multi-layered tracks developed by Keith with a host of collaborators. The dichotomy effectively split the Dr. Octagon character in two, Dooom representing the horror elements and Black Elvis handling sci-fi duties. In the liner notes to the Black Elvis album, released by Columbia/Ruff House, he even calls out his "twin brother" Dr. Dooom, saying "you need to get with a major, buddy."

TWRK

TWRK is a secret alias of a man who has lost his mind with twerk madness. His mission: To cause a devastating wave of booty-popping that will wash over the world in a brutal assault even stronger than Diplo and Nicky Da B's #expressyourself. With the US as obsessed with twerk music as it is now, these tunes from TWRK could not have come at a better time.

This brand new booty banger is a straight mess of huge 808s, big band horns, a vocal line that yells "Ba-ba-doo-ayyy!", and those clap sounds that every twerker knows and loves.

MOSCA

We’ve all read enough artist biographies by now. This is just a little intro to the music I make, the trax I run, and a bit about me.

Long story short, I mostly make and play underground house and techno. I came up on the standard diet of hiphop, jungle, rock and indie, as well as lots of dub reggae, dancehall and world music, so I’ve got as many influences as anyone else I guess. But it took me a while to figure out what it was about music I love, and really it’s just a certain vibe… The shit that grabs me most has always been dark but still sexy, it’s deep and emotional but with energy, it’s dissonant and experimental and raw but still made for the club, and above all it’s got endless groove, it rolls… the direction is always >>>

So that’s what I aim for when I’m making tunes or digging for them. I’m a producer first – as in I started producing before I started to DJ – but to be honest I can’t really say one or the other is more important to me. I love other people’s music too much to ever just play my own trax. But I also love producing, struggling to make that mythical perfect tune, you know? I know it’ll probably never happen but that’s some kinda guiding light for me. I know I don’t put out enough tunes, sorry about that… I’m working on it though. Even after all these years of producing I still feel like the new kid though, I’m still learning about music, and to be honest I hope that never changes.

One other thing to mention – I have a two hour show on BBC Radio 1 where I get in the mix and also bring in some friends and heroes in for guest mixes. This is probably the best way to understand what I’ve been talking about here…

But anyway I could bang on about music all day so best to stop here. Thanks for reading.

T. WILLIAMS

There’s something to be said for getting noticed, for standing out from the crowd. Standing out for the right reasons though isn’t always the case. London’s T.Williams is one of those ‘right’ cases, having accomplished a full sweep of merited recognition over the last couple of years. Emerging onto the house scene in 2010 via Tom Lea’s Local Action imprint, T.Williams instantly marked himself as a breakthrough artist with a difference; his unique take on house music turning heads.

Not stopping at pricking the ears of fellow artists and those of the dancefloor, the end of 2011 saw T.Williams nominated as ‘Best Breakthrough DJ’ by DJ Mag, named as one of the ‘DJ Stars of 2012’ by Time Out and picked by The Guardian for his Fact Magazine mix as one of their favourites of the year. Ahead of the game with his productions, T.Williams also defies the conventions of deep house with his DJ sets seen across the UK and Europe as well as his weekly Rinse FM show. With a DJ schedule that spans London, Manchester and Bristol to Amsterdam, Cologne and Lisbon at clubs such as fabric, Mint, Ministry Of Sound, Studio K and The Cosmic Ballroom; T.Williams’ mature and infectious DJing confronts genre limitation whilst never faltering to move the dance floor.
