Session 1: A Step by Step Approach to Building Self-Esteem
10:00am - 12:30pm £70pp
Poor self-esteem is often responsible for problems with learning, resilience, behaviour and attachment, and our instinct is often that poor self-esteem is at the heart of a child’s difficulties. We want to help children who are reported to be ‘vulnerable’ or lacking in self-belief, but what is ‘self-esteem’ anyway? And how can we help if we don’t have an articulated theory to define self-esteem?; to identify low self-esteem, to develop appropriate interventions, and to recognise the indicators for improved self-esteem.
It is also easy to confuse low self-esteem with self-confidence. Although it is important to understand the distinction and interplay between them, we also need to know why, counter-intuitively, putting our energies into their self-confidence, not self-esteem; is actually the most effective way to make children’s self-esteem and resilience flourish; especially those children to whom resilience and self-esteem do not come so naturally.
This session introduces a simple but profound way of understanding the components of self-esteem, to help show you how to help children foster the ‘I can’ attitude, enabling you to nurture young people who do not just survive, but thrive.
