Description

In 2009, Congress designated September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance under bipartisan federal law. Let's mark the the 16th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy by reflecting and serving in solidarity with our community.

We invite you to join us on one or more of the following projects this anniversary. Sign up for a project with our partners to commemorate an important day in history through service.

Every volunteer must register, parents can fill out forms for children under 18.


Family Friendly Meal Packaging with Muslims Against Hunger's Hunger Van (Geared towards families with children)

Sunday 9/10, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, Repair the World, 808 Nostrand Ave, Crown Heights, Brooklyn

Repair the World NYC is inviting families to join us service day in collaboration with Muslims Against Hunger, the Hunger Van, and PJ Library®.

We will be preparing and packaging meals that will be delivered directly to seniors and people experiencing homelessness around the city. It is a wonderful opportunity to do some food prep work with your children, and teach them about the value of direct service first hand.


Farming at Harlem Grown (18yrs+)

Sunday 9/10, 11:00 am - 1:00 pm, Harlem Grown, 118 West 134th Street, Harlem, New York

Harlem Grown is an independent, non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire youth to lead healthy and ambitious lives through mentorship and hands-on education in urban farming, sustainability, and nutrition. Activities may include stirring/turning compost, weeding, transplanting, moving supplies, building, cleaning and organizing, and watering.

Please wear clothing and shoes that can get dirty, a hat, and bring a bottle of water and a snack.


Meal Packaging with Muslims Against Hunger's Hunger Van (18yrs+)

Sunday 9/10, 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm, Repair the World, 808 Nostrand Ave, Crown Heights, Brooklyn

An initiative created by Muslims Against Hunger, the Hunger Van uses local volunteer facilities for volunteers to prepare and distribute meals in neighborhoods where hunger is a real issue. Volunteers will prepare and package meals to be delivered throughout the Brooklyn community.


Farming at Bushwick City Farm

Sunday 9/11, 1:00 - 3:00pm, at 354 Stockton Street, Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn

Bushwick City Farms is a farm that is totally volunteer run and provides both free, fresh produce and a safe, green space for the Bed-Stuy community. We will be learning together, mulching, planting, and cleaning up the farm.

Please wear clothing and shoes that can get dirty, gloves, a hat and bring a bottle of water and a snack.


SNAP Outreach with Hunger Free America (17yrs+)

Sunday 9/10, 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm, Repair the World, 808 Nostrand Ave, Crown Heights, Brooklyn

In partnership with Hunger Free America, volunteers will distribute flyers providing information on SNAP (food stamp) eligibility to residents of Crown Heights. Our flyers will also inform residents where and when they can be pre-screened for eligibility and receive application assistance from a trained benefits access volunteer.

Please wear sunscreen and be prepared to spend time outside.


Meal Packaging with MyGoodDeed and Corporation for Nations & Community Service (10yrs+)

Monday 9/11, 5:30 - 7:30 pm, at Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum, Pier 86 at 12th Avenue and 46th Street, Manhattan

Join more than 2,000 other New Yorkers to help pack more than half a million meals in NYC for families, seniors and veterans in need. No special skills are required. All you have to do is show up half an hour early, ready to make a difference. If you have questions or need additional information, please contact 9/11 Day at info@911day.org

Please wear comfortable and casual clothing. Closed toe shoes are recommended. Shorts and tees are OK. The facility is air-conditioned.
