Description

WELCOME TO OUR 3rd ANNUAL 'SERENADE GALA' 2019

'PUTTIN' On The Ritz;

A TRIBUTE to BROADWAY & Musical Theatre

Featuring Star Emcee: REX SMITH

'If you're blue and you don't know
where to go to why don't you go
where fashion sits'

In 1930, Harry Richman introduced Irving Berlin's song "Puttin' On the Ritz" in the MUSICAL FILM of the same name. The title derives from the slang expression "to put on the Ritz", meaning to dress very fashionably.

Meanwhile, in 1931, a small group of eager musicians decided to take their love of music to the next level by creating an event called The Calgary Music Festival. Since then, our non-profit & charitable organization has become one of the largest amateur competitive festivals in North America and HOSTS 10,000 performers annually!

Join our non-profit organization in welcoming our MASTER OF CEREMONIES,
the talented Mr. REX SMITH,
as we celebrate and pay a grand tribute to BROADWAY & MUSICAL THEATRE in MET-GALA style
!

IN OUR FESTIVAL'S 88 YEARS, we have seen many a BOOM & BUST and yet we STRONGLY BELIEVE IN THE ENDEARING ROLE of MUSIC, THEATRE, AND SPEECH ARTS as it remains VITAL TO OUR CULTURE & SOCIETY.

MUSICAL THEATRE & BROADWAY STAR:

'REX SMITH'

Rex Smith is a multi-talented performer whose natural singing ability has led him to a successful career as a singer and actor. A veteran of stage and screen, Rex started his career as a "teen idol" heartthrob with the platinum album hit "You Take My Breath Away." Other albums included "Rex", "Where Do We Go From Here", "Sooner Or Later", "Forever", "Camouflage", and most recently, “Simply... Rex”. ⠀

Turning to Broadway at the height of his popularity, Rex made his Broadway debut as Danny Zuko in the original production of "Grease." He captivated both critics and audiences, and received the Theater World Award for his memorable portrayal of Frederick in "The Pirates of Penzance" on Broadway. Other starring roles on Broadway include "Grand Hotel", "Sunset Boulevard", "The Scarlet Pimpernel", "Annie Get Your Gun", "Kiss Me Kate", and currently stars in “I Do I Do!” and “Love Actually Live”.⠀

Rex has also hosted "Solid Gold", and starred in the popular TV series "Street Hawk", and became a household name on the popular CBS daytime drama "As The World Turns". ⠀

Rex Smith has been a Celebrity Host, Corporate Spokesperson and Entertainer for events ranging from Time-Life Inc., HBO, Avon Corp., Time Magazine, and now OUR @cpafestival ANNUAL FUNDRAISING EVENT!

Rex is unique because few entertainers have covered every aspect of show business. Referring to himself as a "Stand-Up Vocalist", Rex blends tales of his career with the music that made him famous. Rex's distinctively charismatic personality captivates and enthralls his audience. Rex's hobbies include sharpening his culinary skills as chef, flying bi-planes, collecting vintage cars and writing songs. He is the proud father of five children.Rex continues to support artistic education and participates in community theaters and schools across the country.⠀

GALA INSPIRATION, 'HARRY RICHMAN'

Harry Richman was a singer, actor, dancer, comedian, pianist, songwriter, bandleader, and night club performer and was most popular in the 1920s and 1930s.

Born Harold Reichman, he started playing piano in a Cincinnati saloon at age 10.
At 18, he changed his name to "Harry Richman", by which time he was already a professional entertainer in vaudeville -- with a two-man act, as a comedian, and then with a song-and-dance number -- and played theaters from Chicago to San Francisco.

Moving east by the early '20s, he and his piano backed Nora Bayes and Mae West, and his Broadway debut came in 1922's Queen o' Hearts. In his peak years, Harry Richman had been one of the highest‐paid performers in show business. He claimed to be making $25,000 a week in 1931 ($415,000 in 2018 dollars).

He also owned a popular night club - a Speakeasy, "Club Richman", which was located next to Carnegie Hall. The room was large, seating 240 people. It was designed to look like a patio with fake windows that opened out to scenes painted in the windows. The roof was painted with stars to reflect the spotlight on the performers. It was a popular location till it burned down in 1929.

Becoming a name, he appeared in "Scandals" as Master of Ceremonies in 1926; where on opening night the first SEVEN ROWS OF THE ORCHESTRA commanded $50 a seat ($700 in 2018 dollars).

He made his feature movie debut in HOLLYWOOD in 1930 with the film Puttin' On the Ritz, featuring the Irving song of the same title, which gave Richman a phonograph hit that year.

His film career was short lived due to his somewhat overpowering personality, and his limited acting skills. This made little difference to his career as he remained a popular nightclub host and stage performer.

Though his fame didn't outlast the Depression era, Harry Richman was one of the top entertainers of the Jazz Age, a nightclub act with a flamboyant style often compared to Al Jolson. A period star of Broadway and the silver screen, he also earned notices for his hobby, aviation; he set a world record for altitude in 1935, and made the first transatlantic round trip in a single-engine plane. He filled his wooden airplane with PING PONG BALLS in order to help it float should they have had to land in the ocean.
