Sequoia National Park Hiking & Sightseeing with LGBT Travelers
Thu, May 18, 2017, 5:00 PM – Sun, May 21, 2017, 8:00 PM PDT
Our group of LGBT Travelers will be exploring Sequoia National Park in California's High Sierra mountains. Trip spans 3-nights starting Thursday, May 18, 2017. This trip is sponsored by the San Diego chapter of LGBT Travelers and will be departing from San Diego on Thursday evening at 5:00pm by way of a carpool. On Friday and Saturday the group will explore Sequoia National Park which will include a hike on both days. We will return to San Diego on Sunday, May 21, 2017. The return trip will include a stop at the Remington Hot Springs along the Kern River (1-hour east of Bakersfield) for a dip in the pools and baths.
The main two hikes planned for Friday and Saturday are described as "moderate":
Heather Lake via the Watchtower (8.4 miles). This is an out and back trail. The trail, one of the most popular in the park, climbs through dense forest to a landscape of polished granite dotted with lakes and framed by mountains. Provides spectacular views of the High Sierras and Sequoia National Park including Tokopah Falls and Mt. Silliman.
Giant Forest Loop (7.6 miles). This loop trail passes through the heart of the aptly named Giant Forest and visits some of the world’s largest trees and most amazing groves of giant sequoias. The trail also passes lovely meadows, Tharp’s Log, and offers a good chance to see wildlife.
Accommodation will be at a gay operated retreat center just outside of Sequoia National Park. The retreat center offers lodging in 9 rooms, each with 4 beds (2-single twin beds and 1-bunk twin beds). Linens, blankets, and pillows are provided. Each room has its own ensuite private bathroom facility. The retreat center has a pool (might still be slightly chilly in May), ping pong, horseshoes, and volleyball. There is also a firepit for evenings around the campfire. Friday and Saturday continental breakfast and to-go sack lunches will be provided.
Please bring your own bath/pool towel, toiletries, flashlight, insect repellant, and water. Please also pack appropriate clothing and shoes for moderate day hiking and possible chilly evenings/mornings. BYOB and any snacks you might want for the long weekend. No food or drink can be purchased at the retreat center. The group will, however, stop into town on the way back from the park each evening for dinner where you can also pick up any other supplies including booze and snacks.
New, first-time, and non-San Diego members are welcome and will be happily accommodated into the group and carpool.
Price includes transportation (carpooling), 3-nights of lodging as described above, 2 breakfasts, 2 sack lunches, and park entrance fee. Dinners, drinks, and any other meals are not included. 15 people minimum, 36 people maximum.
Due to the nature of this meetup, a waiver and release of liability will be required for all participants which will be provided and collected at the start of this event.
This event is in conjunction with the San Diego Gay Singles group and the San Diego Gay Men Singles 35+ group.
