Event description

Description

Join the Open Space Authority Volunteer Land Stewards in partnership with Alum Rock Park to work on a park clean-up of Alum Rock's Weatherloop trail. Volunteers will be using hoes and shovels to remove invasive thistle, mustard and hemlock. Authority staff will meet volunteers at Alum Rock between 9:30 and 10:00 am to fill out waivers, fill up on water, and get protective gear and tools. More specific parking instructions will be sent closer to the event. Parking is free for all volunteers (the Open Space Authority will be providing parking passes for all volunteers).

The Open Space Authority provides all the necessary tools, safety equipment, and training for the day, as well as water, coffee, and snacks (fruit and snack bars). To reduce plastic waste, we ask that you please bring your own water bottle to refill at our hydration station. We also have extra reusable water bottles to ensure participants stay hydrated. A small pack that can carry your lunch, snacks, and water is also recommended as we expect the walk from the vehicles to be at least 20 minutes to the work site.

We will also be providing lunch to volunteers and plan on eating around 12:00 p.m. Please let us know your sandwich preferences (vegetarian, turkey, or other) at least two days in advance. In the spirit of environmental education, we will also provide a short educational talk on the importance of native species. Bring both your muscles and enthusiam for knowledge!

The dress code for safety and comfort is sturdy close-toed shoes, longs pants (no shorts, sweats, or tights), and long sleeved shirts (thistle can be prickly). We'll work through a light rain, but severe weather cancels the event. Terrain may be difficult to navigate, so sturdy, supportive footwear is a must. Participants should also plan on bringing a hat and raingear if we expect rain. Please let us know if you have any issues with mobility so that we can help make this an accessible and enjoyable experience.
