Event Details

Group:        Luncheon and Monthly Meeting

Date:          September 13, 2017

Topic:         Opening Japan to Diversity

Speaker:     Mr. Shigeo Kashiwagi, Guest Professor, Keio University

Venue:        Tokyo American Club

Time:         11:30 Social Gathering  11:50 Luncheon

Will Japan be able to compete and survive in the globalized world in the years to come? Why are young Japanese reluctant to study abroad? How can we educate them to be more active global players and embrace diversity? Why is diversity important for Japan? Please join us for our first luncheon meeting after our long summer break to hear answers to these timely questions. Before joining Keio University in 2007 as a guest professor, Mr. Kashiwagi spent more than 34 years in the Japanese Ministry of Finance, and was seconded to both the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for a total of 12 years. His experience working at these global organizations raised his concerns about the limited number of Japanese working at international institutions. Since 2011, he has been playing an active role at the Centre for International Capacity Building that aims to support and encourage young Japanese to play a more active role in the global arena.

Speaker Profile

Mr. Shigeo Kashiwagi has been teaching economics at the Graduate School of Business and Commerce of Keio University since June 2007, after a lengthy career at the Ministry of Finance. He teaches both Japanese and non-Japanese students in English, on issues such as policy implications of globalization, international finance, fiscal policies, and the Japanese economy. Mr. Kashiwagi holds a BA in economics from Keio University and a MPA from Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University.
