Dating back to the announcement of the Cancer Moonshot in 2016, the U.S. pursuit in advancing cancer research and treatment has been a hallmark of Joe Biden’s efforts both during and after office. Join us to hear Dr. Danielle Carnival, VP of the Biden Cancer Initiative, who will present their work, as well as participate in a panel discussion on science advocacy by PIs and academia.

Bios:

Dr. Danielle Carnival: Prior to joinin the Biden Cancer Initative, Dr. Danielle Carnival most recently served as the Chief of Staff and Senior Policy Director for the White House Cancer Moonshot Task Force. Over her more than six years at the White House, she leveraged her technical scientific expertise to develop programs and policies to make progress on Obama-Biden Administration goals in partnership with Federal agencies and the private, academic and philanthropic sectors. This work spanned areas of health and biomedical policy, including cancer and neuroscience, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, and advancing equity and promoting diversity in STEM fields, among others.

Danielle assumed leadership roles for some of the Administration’s signature initiatives and events, most notably, the White House Cancer Moonshot, White House Science Fairs, College Opportunity Days of Action, and Computer Science for All and Diversity in STEM initiatives. Danielle received her Doctorate in Neuroscience from Georgetown University and her Bachelor’s degree from Boston College.

Dr.Wai Haung Yu: Dr. Wai Haung (Ho) Yu received his PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Toronto and following his doctoral training, Dr. Yu went to New York University/Nathan Kline Institute on a Canadian Institutes of Health Research Postdoctoral Fellowship, with subsequent promotions to Clinical Instructor and then Assistant Professor at NYU prior to joining the Department of Pathology and Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer's Disease and the Aging Brain at Columbia University. Ho’s research intersects basic and translational mechanisms of protein quality control in neurodegenerative disease and has been funded by NIH as well as private foundations including Alzheimer’s Association, Brightfocus, ADDF and others. In addition to his research, Dr. Yu also advises for several organizations including the Society for Neuroscience’s Government and Public Affairs committee, Alzheimer’s Disease Panel for the Society for Women’s Health Research and Weston Brain Institute (Canada). He is also co-founder and Past President for the Greater NYC Chapter for the Society for Neuroscience (braiNY), recipient of the Chapter of the Year Award in 2013.

Dr. Sanford Simon:

Sandy Simon did his undergraduate work at Princeton and then his graduate work at NYU Medical Center, both in physiology & biophysics with a particular emphasis on nerve cells and how they communicate. He came to Rockefeller in 1984 to do his postdoctoral work with Gunter Blobel to learn how a cell biologist would approach the same problems and he has stayed her for the past 34 years. Much of his work has used the approach of, "What can we learn from studying individuals, that we might miss when we studied bulk populations". He has applied this to problems ranging from how to single proteins cross membranes, single phage exit bacteria, single vesicles fuse or internalize, how do single viruses assembly, or dynamics of single proteasomes or single nuclear pores. Most recently he has focused his attention on individual cancers asking what can be learned from studying a single liver cancer that might be missed from a more global approach.

Sandy first started educational outreach as an undergraduate, working with summer students in New York City public schools. For the past 30 years he has been doing science outreach. Initially he worked with teachers in PS183, right across the street from Rockefeller, then branched out across New York City. Currently curriculum that he has worked on can be found not just across the US, but in classrooms from Chile to New Zealand.
Much of his current "outreach" efforts are outside classroom. He is working with cancer patients and their families helping them to organize their medical registries, teaching them about the science of their disease and getting them involved as active and full participants in the research process.
