Description

Course Description:
This conference is for all mental health professionals, including therapists, OTs, COTAs, nurses, and technicians.

It is free for NAH employees with a valid ID. The cost for non-NAH attendants is $300 for health professionals and $150 for students with a valid ID. Fees are payable at the door by check only on October 27th.

This 2-day workshop provides an introduction to sensory processing, polyvagal theory, trauma informed care, and seclusion and restraint reduction models. Learning activities include a combination of lecture, interactive lab and clinical case exploration. A review of supporting research, neuroscience, and related assessment, treatment planning, goal setting and therapeutic interventions are explored. Participants will leave with a variety of practical ideas and resources for individual and programmatic applications.
Course Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
  1. Differentiate between sensory processing disorder types
  2. Recognize how the neuroscience behind the effects of stress and trauma (including polyvagal theory) supports sensory, trauma, and attachment models, and seclusion and restraint reduction practices
  3. Identify how the skilled use of sensory approaches, in a trauma informed manner, supports autonomic regulation, development, and the recovery process
  4. Identify assessment and treatment interventions targeting specific sensory processing patterns in a manner that is trauma informed
  5. Recognize how the use of sensory processing and trauma informed care approaches influence seclusion and restraint reduction
  6. Identify at least 10 new sensory supportive tools to integrate into your practice
