Event description

Description

One of the more difficult aspects of autism is to explain to friends, relatives, teachers and acquaintances about sensory processing disorder. While autism doesn’t appear the same in each child, many children with ASD have hyper- or hyposensitivities, or a combination of both, depending on the situation or the day. There are six primary areas that sensory may exhibit itself in: Oral, Visual, Tactile, Vestibular, Proprioceptive and Olfactory (smell). These sensitivities are hard to explain. Those that don’t understand look at you as if you are being ridiculous; some will respond with “Oh, he just needs to get over it.” Sensory processing disorder (SPD) is misunderstood and often overlooked as a serious problem.

Shelley Boling OTR was born & raised in Alberta, Canada studying there at the UofA. I first worked in Georgia in a rehab hospital which gave me a great foundation for my next adventures working as a traveling therapist in many states and areas of practice (Home Health, Nursing homes, Schools, etc.). Once settled in Colorado for 4 yrs, I worked with children and in Hand Therapy. Since arriving in Hawaii in 2002, with my husband who is also an OT, I have worked exclusively with children. I am trained in Therapeutic Listening, Yoga for the Special Needs Child, as well as the Interactive Metronome. I have worked in the schools, homes & in private school settings for at risk children/teens. I have hosted conferences with mentors such as Sheila Frick, OTR & Julia & Patricia Wilbarger, OTR who are ‘gurus’ in Sensory Integration Treatments in the OT world. I also practice CranioSacral Therapy & Reiki. I am always open to learning new things and enjoy an active life keeping up with 3 little girls of my own. I like to surf, play beach volleyball, hike, bike & do yoga in my free time!
