Perhaps best known as the Democratic candidate for vice president in 2000, Senator Joe Lieberman established himself as a national leader—one who worked across party lines to find common ground, a person who spoke his conscience and got things done for the good of everyone.

He was born in Stamford, Conn., received his bachelor's degree from Yale College in 1964, and his law degree from Yale Law School in 1967. Lieberman was elected to the Connecticut State Senate in 1970 and served there for 10 years, including the last six as majority leader.

From 1983 to 1988, he served as Connecticut’s attorney general. Lieberman, who first was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1988, was returned with landslide margins in 1994 and 2000. In 2006, he was reelected with a comfortable margin to a fourth term as an Independent. In 2011, he announced his plan to retire from the Senate at the end of his fourth term.
