SEMELE

by Handel

2 Hours with Intermission

Preesented by the students of the Classical Vocal Music Department.

Directed by Phyllis Treigle

Musical Direction by Matt Wood

"Semele," George Frideric Handel's Baroque opera, involves powerful gods, jealous goddesses and quivering mortals.

The moral is if you play with fire, expect to get burned.

Based on Ovid's "Metamorphoses," the opera tells the story of Semele, mother of Bacchus. She is to wed Prince Athamas but she is in love with Jupiter, King of the gods. As her wedding draws near, Jupiter carries her to Olympus, where he keeps her guarded by a watchful dragon. When Jupiter's wife Juno hears of this she is furious, and plans Semele's demise.
