About this Event

Dates and Explanation of "Self-Paced" participation

Please click here if you would prefer to be a participant in the 4 weekly online Zoom classes for this series instead (scheduled for 7pm (PDT) on Tuesdays, Mar. 30, Apr. 6, 13, 20, 2021.)

Sliding Scale pricing US $280 - US $140 per person for a "Self-Paced" ticket (plus Eventbrite admin fee). The sliding scale pricing means we'd love to receive US $280 per person for the series, since this price is chosen to support the sustainability of the Communication Dojo. However, we also want to be able to welcome those for whom the US $280 price is not affordable, so we make a range of ticket prices available.

If money is an obstacle please write to us at info@communicationdojo.com to ask about partial or full scholarships.

What's included?

The "Self-paced" tickets on sale here are intended for those who will not be able to attend the live classes on Zoom, because of schedule or time zone conflicts, or because all the places for those classes are already full. They're also for you if you're attending so many live video conferences currently that you'd prefer not to attend more for this course.

The "Self-paced" tickets on sale from this page give you access to the online classroom and daily email sequence of the 4-week "Communication in Intimate Relationships" workshop series happening in June 2020.

The "Self-paced" tickets do not give you access to the weekly, live, online classes on Zoom. See link above if you'd like to attend those live classes.

Your remote access to our online classroom (details below) will start at or before 11:59am (PDT), on Friday, Apr 2nd, 2021. Online access will remain open until, at least, Dec 2nd, 2021 at 11:59pm (PDT).

You will have access to the following learning resources:

  • Online classroom updated weekly, containing:
  • Daily email (optional opt-in) for the duration of the series with bonus material:

Other features of the Communication Dojo approach:

  • Same cohort of workshop participants for the whole series
  • Homework/Practice requests each week
  • Opportunity to contact other participants for practice and discussion during the 4-week series and beyond
  • Minimal reliance on “jargon” i.e. language that might be confusing or alienating for those not familiar with NVC

"Nonviolent communication (or connected communication) has helped me and my partner speak in a much more conscious and effective way. It was a perfect transition and supplement to our prior couples therapy. It helps in every way, at work, with friends, with family, etc. I can't recommend these classes and Newt as a teacher enough. I wish we all had to take NVC classes in school, it would change the world." ~ Elise H., San Francisco

Communication in Intimate Relationships

"It may be most difficult to empathize with those we are closest to" ~ Marshall Rosenberg, PhD., Founder of the Center for Nonviolent Communication

Intimate relationships can become fertile ground for highly disconnected modes of communication. There can be fierce fights where we resort to the usual tactics of blame, judgment, criticism, demands, threats and "the silent treatment." Fueling the fire we have the well-known hot-button topics between primary partners: money, children, physical intimacy,  jealousy & attachment, priorities, religion & politics, etc.

I hear variations on the following comments often:

"I don't like how we communicate, but we don't seem to be able to change it, and it's maybe getting worse"

"Our issues are not really about communication."

"If only my partner would change, I think we'd get along much better."

Regardless of who starts it, it takes two to continue a fight or to engage in disconnected, frustrating and ineffective communication. So, even if just one of you becomes more open to dialogue, and less willing to fight, positive change happens. If you both want this change, it will happen even more quickly.

In this series we'll be covering the essentials of healthy communication within intimate relationships. Even if you don't believe that your issues are really about communication, you will not be able to address them effectively unless you have a way of communicating that works for you both. We invite you to take the plunge and join us! Our workshop participants are often surprised by how much fun they have as they work together on improving their communication!

The Communication Dojo

The Communication Dojo is a learning environment designed for everyone, regardless of prior experience with "Connected Communication" (aka "Nonviolent Communication" (NVC)). This four week committed series format allows you opportunities to practice what you're learning between classes, then to come back the next week with questions. You'll build skills, knowledge, and community week by week.

"As soon as you concern yourself with the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ of your fellows, you create an opening in your heart for maliciousness to enter. Testing, competing with, and criticizing others will weaken and defeat you." ~ Morihei Ueshiba, Founder of Aikido

The Communication Dojo approach is inspired in part by teaching from martial arts. This is not a lecture series. Most of the learning happens by taking part in experiential learning in pairs and/or small group discussions - “learning by doing.”
