Workshop Description:

Self-harm or Non-suicidal Self Injury (NSSI) is a growing concern for those working with youth. The need to assess for suicidal intent may arise and helpers often struggle with how to proceed. This 2.5 hour workshop provides participants with skills and strategies to assist the worker/clinician to assess for severity of self-injurious behaviors. It will also allow participants to identify different levels of risk which include potential suicidal intent. Preliminary intervention strategies will be introduced and reviewed.

Workshop Objectives: By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Define self-harm and how it relates to self-injurious behaviors.
  2. Identify reasons why people may self-harm
  3. Devise support plans for self-harming individuals.
  4. Describe protective and risk factors for suicide in the adolescent/young adult population.
  5. Describe assessment skills for suicide.
  6. Describe safety planning skills in response to reported or suspected suicidal ideations through case vignette/role play.
