Description

Self Help Groups: An Integral Treatment Component for Long-Term Recovery

This workshop explains the oftentimes misunderstood long-term recovery benefits of self-help groups such as AA/NA and Al-Anon. The 12 steps will be explained in the context of transforming the individual from despair to hope through connection with recovering individuals who share the common goal of sobriety. Students will explore the efficacy of the 12 step process and learn how to incorporate it into an overall approach to long-term substance use disorder treatment. Other modalities of self-help groups will be discussed and offered as options for both the individual and the family.

Objectives

1. Gain a thorough understanding of the 12 step model and the connection between community peer support and long-term sustained recovery
2. Understand the 12 step model from a
biopsychosocial perspective in treating addictive disorders
3. Gain knowledge of many other options for self- help programs, including those for family
