About this event
Join us for a conversation on Self and Collective Care for Black Folx with Brianna A. Baker!
The past two years have been riveted by both social and pathological pandemics.
In the midst of this societal disruption, “self-care” has become a trending topic on social media, amongst celebrity influencers, and in everyday discourse. Current conceptualizations of self-care are Westernized and Eurocentric in that they emphasize solitary, time-consuming, and often expensive activities to promote notions of happiness and peace. However, for many BIPOC folx, self-care seems daunting and impossible amidst the backdrop of racism, oppression, and cultural erasure.
This roundtable shall frame self- and community-care as liberatory and resistance practices. Under this perspective, self-care is not a thing you “do”, but rather a way you think, live, and experience the world through a commitment to self and humanity. Similarly, we will explore how the intersections of racism with other systems of oppression shape the self-care needs and practices of diverse Black and Brown communities.

Darkness RISING: A Mental Health Awareness Project Nonprofit aims to:
-Improve the health and wellness of the Black community
-Raise awareness about mental health in our community
-Empower and engage our community via resources, events and services
-Erase the negative stigma of mental health issues
Darkness RISING 501(c)3 is a vehicle to help individuals in the Black community begin conversations with their family, coworkers, and friends about their mental health and emotional well-being. We accomplish this by partnering with mental health providers and/or mental health educators to create events, seminars, and sessions where the intersection between mental health education and the arts collide.
