Helping Students to Become Strong Self-Advocates (May 5, 2017)
This session will discuss why it is so crucial to help students with disabilities develop self-advocacy skills and strategies to do so. Presenters will include Montana educators, parents of youth with disabilities and other local agencies.
Learning objectives will include:
How to help a student learn to advocate for him/herself and how milestones in education can help this process. This will include steps that can be taken to help a student learn to facilitate his/her own IEP
What it means to advocate for a student, but still keep a team focus.
Understanding guardianship vs. supported decision making
Conversation with Julie Beckett: national speaker, parent and advocate
Process of parental grief and how it impacts advocacy. Family transition planning being a necessary component for student’s success.
