Event description
“Post-Tensioned Concrete” - Design, Field Issues, Evaluation and Repair Techniques

About this Event

Post-tensioned (PT) concrete structures are very common in South Florida. Though prestressed concrete design is offered in many of the universities, as an optional senior/graduate level course, only very few engineers took advantage to learn the fundamental design concepts. Thus it is essential for the practicing PEs and industry professionals involved in PT projects to understand the basic concepts of PT concrete structural design including historical evolution of PT material and system, various field issues during the construction, and issues during the service life of the structures.

This presentation is intended to provide an overview of PT design fundamentals, commonly occurring field issues, evaluation of existing PT structures, and repair technics, that engineers should possess for an efficient, successful design, implementation and completion of any project whether the project is under Structural or Performance practices. Some of the main topics that will be covered are:

  • Intro to prestressed concrete
  • Unbonded PT
  • Structural analysis
  • Field inspections
  • Protection against elements
  • PT building evaluation
  • Non-destructive and destructive testing
  • Report preparation and its limitations
  • Field conditions and repair options
  • Concrete removal – safety concerns
  • Tendon repair, stressing, and protection methods
  • Maintenance and monitoring
  • Record and document close-out
