How can general practitioners address excess weight / obesity in children
Dr Sonia Saxena - Clinical Reader Imperial College London
Sonia is a GP academic leading research to improve prevention and treatment of childhood illness in primary care including tackling obesity. She has developed guidance and tools for GPs to assess and advise families with overweight children. Sonia has led initiatives to raise awareness of childhood obesity and contributed to the UK government’s policy on food and nutrition in British schools.
Prof Russell Viner – Professor of Adolescent Health at UCL, Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health
Russell is a consultant academic paediatrician interested in improving health services for childhood obesity and broader adolescent health for the Department of Health. He is a scientific advisor to the National Child Measurement Programme and together with Sonia and others recently completed an NIHR programme grant (PROMISE programme).
Dr Zoe Williams - Clinical Champion for the RCGP’s clinical priority ‘Physical Activity and Lifestyle’
Zoe is a south London GP who is passionate about increasing awareness of patients and colleagues on the benefits of physical activity and lifestyle. She is obesity lead in her CCG and founder and director of Fit4Life, an organisation that delivers educational workshops to schoolchildren to ‘Inspire, Educate and Motivate’ them to lead healthier lives.
Dr Rachel Pryke - Clinical Champion for Nutrition for Health, RCGP
Rachel is a part-time GP in Redditch, Worcestershire, with particular interests in child obesity and women's health. She established the RCGP Nutrition Group in 2013 has contributed to obesity steering groups and reports for the Royal College of GPs and Academy of Medical Royal Colleges. She has written two books about weight for children and young people.
