Event description

Description

Learn how to harvest and process a variety of vegetable seeds. We will collect, thresh, and winnow some dry-seeded crops such as peas, beans, spinach, and/or lettuce, and also demonstrate extraction and fermentation of seeds from wet or moist fruits like tomato, cucumber, and/or melons.

We will discuss the upcoming squash seed harvest, how to handle immature seeds if there's a threat of early frost, and how to plant overwintered crops for next year's seed production.

Bring your questions about any seed-growing or harvest topic.

Please note: This class is the third in a series of four. The next will be held on October 10; titled "Seed Cleaning and Processing," you can register here.

Kathleen Plunkett-Black of Plum Creek Seeds will teach the series of classes. Kathleen is a lifelong gardener and grows all the vegetables to feed her family year-round. She grows her own seeds for over 200 varieties of vegetables, grains, dry beans, flowers, and herbs. Kathleen has been an active member of the Seed Savers Exchange for over thirty years and has led many workshops on gardening and seed saving. She is passionate about teaching and passing on the skills of subsistence gardening and seed saving.
